-
- With the upcoming release of System 7.0 sometime next year, there has been
- mention of a new feature that will be offered called "aliasing". In general
- terms, this will allow you to define an icon that, when double-clicked, can
- launch another program located somewhere on any mounted disk or server. Right
- now, certain programs must remain in their own folder so they will be able
- to locate files, such as dictionaries, pref files, or other startup information.
- This is fine as long as your folders do not go more than one or two levels
- deep. Any further than that and you must open all the folders first to run
- the program, or use packages such as QuicKeys to do the work for you.
-
- ALIAS is a small program that will allow you to choose any application, and
- then ALIAS will create an icon (the same as the application you wish to
- alias) that you may move anywhere on your drive. When you double-click this
- icon, it will automatically switch to the directory of the real application
- and then launch that application.
-
- To use ALIAS, you must have the two files ALIAS INSTALL and ALIAS SHELL. The
- install program is the actual program you will double-click to create new
- alias icons. The shell file is used by the install program to create a stand
- alone icon that will launch the chosen application.
-
- When you first run ALIAS, choose 'Create New Alias' from the file menu, or
- press the command-N sequence. You will be asked to locate the application
- you wish to alias; this can be any double-clickable application such as
- Microsoft Word/Excel, the MPW Shell, favorite utilities, etc. Once you locate
- and double-click the application, you will be asked to locate the ALIAS SHELL
- file. Locate and double-click the Alias Shell file from the standard file
- dialog. The final step will be for you to choose the name and location of the
- new alias icon/program. Enter the name of the alias (default is the application
- name plus the extention of "alias") and choose the drive and directory to
- create the icon/program.
-
- Once you have finished the last step, you will be told when the creation is
- completed. You can now choose to create more aliases, or choose Quit from
- the File menu to try your new icon.
-
- NOTE: If for any reason you double-click the alias icon and the Mac simply
- beeps and returns you to the Finder, there was (for some reason or another)
- not enough memory to complete the launch. To correct this problem, you can
- highlight the icon of the alias and choose Get Info... from the Finder, then
- set the application memory size (of the alias) to a larger size (usually step
- by 8-16K). This seems to only happen rarely under MultiFinder.
